Google AI MAX: Navigating the Next Evolution of Search

With Google’s AI Max officially coming out of Beta, advertisers have continued to test and leverage the technology to further expand their current Paid Search efforts. When deployed strategically, AI Max has demonstrated the ability to increase reach and conversion performance while maintaining efficiency. While not always the best strategy for a campaign, it presents a valuable opportunity for advertisers wanting to capture incremental growth beyond their existing keyword targeting.

What is AI Max and Why Does it Matter?

Google Ads with AI Max is an opt-in campaign-level optimization suite for your standard Paid Search campaigns. The two main features are search term matching and asset optimization. They both leverage Google AI to optimize your ads in real time and tailor your creative message to reach your customer and drive more value for your business.

  • Search Term Matching: Instead of only showing our ads for the exact keywords we are bidding on, this uses Google AI to match our ads to relevant search queries. This helps you expand your reach and capture users you might otherwise miss.
  • Asset Optimization: Allows Google AI to customize your ad copy using your existing ads and website content, and direct users to the most relevant page on your site.

Google’s introduction of AI Max shows a broader shift toward intent based targeting rather than the traditional keyword targeting we all know. This gives advertisers the opportunity to participate in even more relevant searches that they may not have already been captured through their standard keywords. Similar to when Performance Max (PMax) rolled out and transformed campaign optimization across Google’s inventory, AI Max represents the next step in Google’s vision of leveraging AI to improve performance and adapt to evolving consumer search behavior.

Our Strategic Perspective and Approach to Testing AI Max

At Orchard, we have approached this evolution in search with a testing mindset. We have found that AI Max might not be the best fit for all campaigns, however, when implemented strategically, it can warrant successful results. When thinking about the right testing environment, we want to make sure that when we deploy, the campaigns encompass:

  • High intent search traffic
  • Healthy and consistent conversion volume
  • Stable and accurate conversion tracking
  • Strong and clearly defined campaign structure
  • Relevant click traffic supported by negative keyword strategy

Knowing there is always a level of risk when testing new AI-powered automated settings, we approach AI Max with a measured and controlled testing framework. In a recent test, we used Google’s Drafts and Experiments, where we enabled AI Max in a test campaign, and split traffic 50/50 between our test and control. All other campaign variables remained identical, with AI Max serving as the only differentiator. This approach allowed us to isolate the impact of AI Max and evaluate its ability in driving incremental demand and conversion growth.

What Our Testing Revealed

Our experiment confirmed that by leveraging AI Max, we were able to drive incremental conversion volume that we would otherwise not have captured with our existing keywords alone. Comparing our test vs. control campaigns, notable key stats include:

  • Drove 106% more conversion volume
  • CPC was 24% lower
  • Cost per conversion was 48% lower
  • Clicks (+42%) and impressions (+66%) increased

These results show that Google’s AI Max campaign feature has proven to increase conversion volume and efficiency overall.

Key Factors to Consider

While AI Max has demonstrated strong potential to expand reach and uncover incremental demand, advertisers should approach adoption strategically and ensure the proper guardrails are in place. It is important to consider the following:

  • Apply brand inclusions and exclusions to maintain control over brand traffic.
  • Ensure text guidelines are in place for asset optimization.
  • Maintain strong landing page relevance to improve intent matching.
  • Continue monitoring search terms and apply negatives as needed.
  • Define clear success metrics to measure incremental impact.
  • Validate results before scaling AI Max across additional campaigns.

Recommended Path Forward

Based on our testing and Google’s continued investment in AI-driven search, we believe that when deployed strategically, AI Max presents an opportunity to drive incremental growth beyond traditional keyword targeting.

We recommend viewing AI Max as a strategic enhancement to an already strong search strategy, leveraging automation to build upon existing campaign success rather than replace it. As the search landscape continues to evolve, it is imperative to continuously test, evaluate, and strategically adopt emerging AI capabilities to drive long-term performance and success.
