Your Social Content is Now Part of Your Search Strategy

Social media traditionally was viewed as a place for brands to connect with audiences, build awareness, and participate in conversations. As search systems continue to evolve, social media is taking on another role: a source of information for AI-powered discovery.
As search engines like Google increasingly incorporate social content into AI-generated overviews, the content brands create on social media platforms may influence what consumers discover long before they ever visit a website.
Recent studies show that social media is becoming an increasingly important source for AI-powered search and discovery. One in 15 searches is now answered using social media, while YouTube is emerging as a major source for AI-generated answers, appearing in 12.8% of AI answers. Facebook and Instagram also play a significant role, appearing in 6.2% and 6.1% of AI answers, respectively, making Meta a top resources for AI overviews. LinkedIn is also gaining traction, appearing in 1.9% of AI answers, particularly for professional and B2B-related information.
Social content is no longer confined in-platform. The way social media is strategically utilized by brands is more important than ever. The captions, images, videos, and links brands post can turn into answers when consumers search for information elsewhere. This means that social has evolved beyond an engagement channel. It’s an outlet for discovery and guiding conversions further down the decision journey.
Followers Aren’t the Only Measure of Discoverability
For years, follower count was treated as one of the greatest indicators of influence. A large audience can certainly help gain visibility but reach alone does not guarantee that posts will be picked up by AI. Accounts with large followings do not necessarily get the upper hand when it comes to getting cited in AI overviews. Answering the questions people are asking in search behavior is the main driver for getting discovered.
When consumers search, AI systems scan major social platforms for content for their answers. Rather than focusing only on whether a post will perform well in-feed, brands should ensure their content addresses questions their audience is actively asking. A post can generate engagement today while informing answers for a search tomorrow.
Social Channels Get Cited for Different Reasons
AI does not treat social media as one entity. Different platforms have different strengths and audiences that serve different purposes when it comes to discoverability. AI uses different channels to help answer different questions:
- Instagram: Visual discovery and inspiration
- Facebook: Community knowledge and business inspiration
- TikTok: Trends and personal recommendations
- LinkedIn: Professional expertise and thought leadership
- Reddit: First-hand experiences and community building
- YouTube: Deep-dive education and longer-form tutorials
- X: Real-time conversations and breaking information
What Does This Mean for Brands
This doesn’t mean that brands should start creating social content exclusively for AI. Instead, brands should create content that is both targeted to the audience they want to reach now but also answers the questions that same audience might have later. Creating a balanced content plan is the key to succeeding in-platform while also increasing discoverability through AI searches.
